Ian Rickson and Kristin Scott Thomas reunite to bring a fresh staging of a Chekhov classic to life. Scott Thomas previously starred as Arkadina in Rickson’s acclaimed production of The Seagull, which played in both London and on Broadway—a performance that earned her the Olivier Award for Best Actress.

Most recently, Kristin received the inaugural Leading Light Award at the Women’s Prize for Playwriting, honouring a lifetime of artistic achievement and her outstanding contribution to culture. Her many accolades also include a BAFTA and Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for Four Weddings and a Funeral, a BAFTA nomination for Darkest Hour, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for The English Patient.

Cherry Orchard fails to blossom
I’d watch First Desk read the telephone directory, if such things still exist. But this production never really takes off or shows why this play remains so revered more than a century after it was written. Stephen Mangan has the affability but not the heft to convey the shift of the era when his character, a parvenu from emancipated serf stock, buys out the feckless aristocrats who can’t survive without bonded labour.
