A Man For All Seasons

Following record-breaking ticket sales across the country and a hugely acclaimed national tour earlier this year, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS starring Martin Shaw and Gary Wilmot, will transfer to London’s Harold Pinter Theatre this summer, preceded by a limited tour to Brighton and York.

The greatest, most powerful and dangerous figures who shaped English history are brought vividly to life in Robert Bolt’s award- winning play, directed by Jonathan Church.

Martin Shaw stars as Sir Thomas More – scholar, ambassador, Lord Chancellor and friend to King Henry VIII. Above all, he is a man of integrity, loved by the common people and his own family. When Henry demands a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, clearing the way for him to marry Anne Boleyn, the staunchly Catholic Thomas is forced to choose between his loyalty and his own conscience, committing an incredible act of defiance for which he eventually pays the ultimate price...

Martin Shaw is known to millions for his television roles in Judge John Deed, Inspector George Gently and The Professionals. His recent West End stage appearances include Hobson’s Choice, The Best Man and Twelve Angry Men.

The right thing to do, Martin. In so doing, your own portrayal gained prowess. Our nation harmed itself when it harmed Sir Thomas More…we’re still reaping what we sowed.

Compelling
If you enjoyed the original film of the same title you will love the play which is true to the original. Atmospheric set, costumes and staging and wonderful cast.

Brilliant acting
This was an excellent play, well acted with an edge of seat ending.

Ageless drama, always relevant
If you like a true tale of personal morality versus state fascism, go see this. The Harold Pinter theatre is perfectly suited to the presentation of a story like this. The whole cast is brilliant throughout, though Shaw, the man of indomitable conscience, is exceptional. His transformation from More the man of state, into More the catholic martyr is extraordinary and totally riveting.

A good historical drama
Martin Shaw was brilliant and was supported very well by other good actors. Cromwell and the King were excellent. The narrator who took various parts such as steward or servant was excellent and very amusing. The lighting was very dark; it might have been difficult to see from a distance but we were in the front stalls so it was OK.
